Save the date: Sustainable Visual Arts Day 26.4.2024

The Sustainable Visual Arts Network will organise the first Sustainable Visual Arts Day in Helsinki in April, aiming to inspire and provide tools for visual arts organisations and artists to work together towards ecological sustainability.

The Sustainable Visual Arts Network is a peer-to-peer network for organisations and actors in the visual arts field. It aims to deepen the knowledge of the visual arts sector on ecological sustainability and support the sector’s transition to ecologically sustainable practices. In 2024, the network will be led by Frame Contemporary Art Finland and IHME Helsinki, welcoming all interested organisations and actors to join.

The event on Friday, 26 April 2024, from 10 am to 4 pm is open for all actors of the visual arts sector and consists of presentations and workshops. In the event, the vihreataide.fi website (Green Art), containing tools to support ecological sustainability, will be launched. The event will take place at the University of the Arts in Sörnäinen, Helsinki, with a capacity of 100 participants. The presentations will be also streamed live. Workshops can be attended remotely.

The vihreataide.fi website will contain tools for measuring environmental impact, best practices from professionals in the art field and guidelines for sustainable exhibition production. It will also include a sustainability calculator of visual arts for assessing the climate and environmental impact of an artwork, exhibition or other production.

The project has received support from the Ministry of Education and Culture for the renewal of culture and creative industries. The funding is part of the Next Generation EU programme.

The event programme will be announced and registration will open in March 2024. The languages of the event are Finnish and English.

The project involves operators in contemporary art and art education in Finland: Frame Contemporary Art Finland, The Mustarinda Association, Kunsthalle Helsinki, the Artists’ Association of Finland, the Academy of Fine Arts of the Uniarts Helsinki and the Arts Academy of Turku University of Applied Sciences. Other expert partners include the EMMA – Espoo Museum of Modern Art, HIAP – Helsinki International Artist Programme, IHME Helsinki, the Finnish National Gallery, Finnish Museums Association, Pro Artibus Foundation and the Finnish Artists’ Studio Foundation.
