Elias Jurvanen has started work as Communications Intern for IHME Helsinki Commission 2024: the Maaleipä Challenge. He holds a BA in Media Studies from the University of Turku and is currently completing his Master’s degree.

Elias has previous experience in communications from the Ministry of Finance. Last autumn, he did editorial tasks at the Love & Anarchy film festival in Helsinki, and is a fan of many of the city’s public cultural and art events.

It’s a pleasure to be part of IHME Helsinki! It felt very natural to go from film festivals to contemporary art. Since I am particularly interested in public art, being part of the Maaleipä Challenge is a great opportunity to learn about participatory contemporary-art production, while at the same time gaining expertise.

Elias will work with IHME’s Communications Planner to produce the communications and marketing for the Maaleipä Challenge, and also assist in production tasks. He is a specialist in audiovisual storytelling and has been actively involved in a variety of art and culture projects alongside his work and studies.

I see myself as taking a wide-ranging, knowledgeable, inquisitive approach to my work. I also love food and bread, and am interested in their health benefits and ecology. I am grateful to be involved in promoting eco-social education and positive cultural change by combining artistic work with sustainable development. A fantastic project.

Recruiting university interns is integral to IHME Helsinki’s work. In so doing, we promote equality in our operations, while giving people a chance to learn about the running of a contemporary-art organisation.

We at IHME are excited to be working with Elias. The Maaleipä Challenge is looking for recipes that improve the wellbeing of the earth and the gut, as well as of people and the climate. Prizes will be awarded for the five best breads and bakers at a ceremony on 21 September. The event will highlight the bakers of Maaleipä breads and the producers of raw materials that care for the soil, and also spark a discussion about food security. Take part in the Challenge and submit your own Maaleipä bread recipe by 1 September!
