IHME TET Trainees
During the last week of September, the IHME Helsinki team was joined by two “cultural TET trainees”, Sansa and Nea from Herttoniemi High School. (TET is short for the Finnish TyöElämään Tutustuminen – working life orientation). The TET trainees had an opportunity to learn about this year’s IHME Helsinki Commission and about working in a cultural organisation. Nea and Sansa wrote this about their week at IHME:
“Hi! We are Nea and Sansa, 9th graders from Herttoniemi High School. We are interested in different forms of art, music, drawing and sewing. In our free time we like to play tennis and draw. We wanted to join IHME Helsinki for TET because, besides art, we are interested in climate issues. Our favourite school subjects are art, geography and biology, so we thought IHME Helsinki would be a good fit for us.”
What is cultural TET?
A TET placement is a period during which eighth and ninth graders can get to know and learn about working life, but how is cultural TET different? Cultural TET gives young people an opportunity to get to know and participate specifically in the work of the cultural sector. During TET, they can learn skills such as creativity and organisation, customer service, or learn about project-based work. They also have a chance to bring their own perspective to the workplace. In particular, IHME Helsinki gives trainees an opportunity to learn about project-based work from a broader perspective than would be the case in ordinary TET.
What have we learned during the TET period?
During the TET period, we have learned all sorts of new skills and knowledge that we may need in future working life. The information-search tasks have taught us how to find information on different websites and how to better understand different texts. The short videos on IHME Helsinki’s YouTube channel were very instructive and we learned a lot about this year’s IHME Helsinki Commission, the Maaleipä Challenge. The educational package for young people taught us skills such as how to compare bread products in the shops with Maaleipä breads, and how to think creatively about the subject.
What have we done during the TET period?
During TET, we got to know about this year’s IHME Helsinki Commission, the Maaleipä Challenge, and the related educational package, as part of which we got to draw a mind map on the topic and to answer the questions on the Maaleipä Challenge website. During TET, we also had an opportunity to watch short YouTube videos related to the Maaleipä Challenge.
Why go to IHME for TET?
We recommend IHME Helsinki to anyone who is interested in art and science. IHME gives you a great first impression of what it’s like to work with multidisciplinary professionals in the arts and sciences. IHME also has great, friendly staff who make you feel welcome and also consider the young person’s own interests and wishes.”
Are you interested in a work placement in cultural work?
IHME Helsinki is happy to welcome cultural-TET trainees. The idea of cultural TET is to offer young people a period of work experience during which they will be involved in developing the work of a cultural institution or of an organisation in some other field.
