Are you excited by the idea of developing your own Maaleipä bread recipe? Looking for inspiration from other bakers? To launch the Challenge, we invited three food influencers to devise their own Maaleipä breads. Feel free to use ideas from their recipes for your own bread.

The IHME Helsinki Commission 2024 Cooking Sections’ Maaleipä Challenge was launched in April 2024. The Maaleipä Challenge is looking for breads that combine the wellbeing of the soil, sea and human gut. The aim of the Challenge is to establish the word “maaleipä” – bread for the soil – in the Finnish language to refer to breads made from ingredients that care for the land, the sea, and us. Use the word and share your own recipe with the #Maaleipä hashtag.

For tips on ingredients and details of participation visit: www.maaleipa.fi. You have until 23:59 on 1 September to submit your recipe.

Maaleipä breads will be celebrated on Saturday 21 September at Teurastamo Kellohalli, where the jury will award prizes for the five best breads and bakers. Kellohalli will host a Maaleipä bread exhibition, a market, bread chants, and Maaleipä-inspired delicacies.
