A future sustainability expert

Ines Oreschnikoff is a student at SYKLI Environmental College and IHME Helsinki’s new eco-coordinator. Her work as IHME’s eco-coordinator is being done as the development project that forms part of her studies. Prior to attending Sykli, Ines spent several years in the wine industry in Austria, and earned a Master’s in Management from the Johannes Kepler University Linz, Austria, where she specialised in sustainability communication in the wine industry. While in Austria, she collaborated with the local art and culture collective Kaze Elza and the Spielraum Gaspoltshofen culture centre, helping them run events across the country. These experiences sparked her interest in switching to the world of art and culture.

Ines returned to Finland at the end of 2024, with the aim of working in the cultural sector. Since then, she has made an active contribution to sustainability communication and event planning in the Nordic Ocean Watch Finland (NOW) collective – an environmental organization dedicated to protecting the Baltic Sea.

At Sykli, she is studying for a specialist vocational qualification in environmental studies, which allows her to explore the management of sustainable development in depth, learning how processes can be developed and formulated holistically from a sustainability perspective.

Ines contacted IHME Helsinki about the possibility of carrying out a sustainability-related development project in our organization. She wanted a placement where she could learn from trailblazers and sustainability influencers, while also combining her interests in sustainable development, art, and event production.

IHME Helsinki was new to me and, as I got to know their work, I was pleasantly surprised. I wondered why I hadn’t come across them before. Wonderful art projects that invite us to broaden our perspectives—both as individuals and as part of a community. I am excitedly looking forward to the knowledge and skills I will gain over the coming months as part of the IHME Helsinki team. This is a great opportunity for me to see how an art organization focused on social change operates in practice, and how responsibility is being promoted in the art and event arena.

What attracts Ines to the art and culture field is the concrete nature and ever-evolving character of its projects, which combine to create an environment where continuity and change complement one another. At IHME Helsinki Ines is responsible for coordinating the Ekokompassi environmental management system, forecasting and calculating carbon footprints, and reporting.
