Film Screening and Discussion

Welcome to a film screening and discussion in Finnkino Maxim (Kluuvikatu 1) on the Night of Science on Thursday, 25 January 2024. The film is artist Francis Alÿs’ first feature, Sandlines, The Story of History (Iraq 2018–2020).

In it, children from a mountain village near Mosul re-enact the history of Iraq, beginning with the secret Sykes–Picot Agreement of 1916 and ending with the Islamic State’s 2016 reign of terror. Through play, children explore their past in order to understand their present.

On the Night of Science, the film will be shown twice at Maxim 1, Finnkino Maxim, with a discussion about the film’s themes between screenings. The participants in the discussion are artist and curator Ahmed Al-Nawas and doctoral researcher Bruno Jäntti from the University of Helsinki. The programme has been curated by IHME Helsinki Executive Director and Curator Paula Toppila. The film is in Arabic with English subtitles. The discussion will be in English. The event is free of charge.
